First digital imaging microscope developed for medical use in Japan
Physical fatigue (due to long periods of observation or a shortage of pathologists) is still a problem at clinical sites where pathological examinations are performed. Furthermore, many cases of pathological observation are difficult to determine, and physicians seek advice from other physicians on a daily basis, either in the same location or in distant locations.
As a result, there have been time and space constraints, such as the trustee physician sending a preparation sample to an outsourcing contractor and visiting the outsourcing contractor.
According to Nikon Corporation, this is the basis for the development of the digital microscope, Eclipse Ui. The device has been designed without an eyepiece so that the observation screen can be shared on the display.
Because an image can be displayed on the display 2.5 seconds after setting a sample, a physician can conduct pathological observation work in a natural position without having to bend down to look into the eyepiece. Furthermore, the observation screen can be shared via the display, facilitating discussion. In other words, Eclipse Ui can help to reduce the pathologist’s physical burden while also improving pathological observation workflow.
The company says that it plans to launch the product in Japan by the end of May this year, and then expand it to the US and Europe to help pathologists by improving the workflow of pathological diagnosis.
