Classes suspended in Manila amid extreme heat
Several schools in the Philippines’ National Capital Region suspended classes on Monday, 3 March, due to soaring temperatures, with the heat index expected to reach up to 42°C.
In Manila, afternoon classes in all public and private schools were canceled based on a recommendation from the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Mayor Honey Lacuna urged residents to stay hydrated, warning of heat-related illnesses.
Schools in the cities of Malabon, Las Piñas, Parañaque, and Marikina also suspended classes. Meanwhile, in Valenzuela and Caloocan, the suspension applies only to public schools from kindergarten to senior high school.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Central Luzon State University in Nueva Ecija will experience a heat index of 45°C, categorized as “dangerous” for heat-related illnesses.
