Philippines Reports First Death Due to Vaping-Related Lung Injury
On May 31, the Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) announced the country’s first death attributed to e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury (EVALI). The victim, a 22-year-old resident of Laguna, Philippines, died from a heart attack following severe lung damage caused by daily vaping over two years.

According to research from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), the victim had experienced severe chest pain, shortness of breath, and other symptoms, despite having no history of smoking, alcohol consumption, or drug use.
This incident is one of three EVALI cases reported in May 2024, coinciding with the DOH’s push to amend the controversial vape bill. This bill, which became law in 2022, lowered the legal age for vaping from 21 to 18 and eased regulations on flavorings, advertising, and sponsorship of vape products.
