Phil DOH Issues Alert on Pertussis and Measles Spreading; Urges Vaxx
The Philippines is currently experiencing a rise in cases of pertussis (whooping cough) and measles, prompting the Department of Health (DOH) to intensify vaccination campaigns. Pertussis causes flu-like symptoms initially, evolving into a distinctive cough, while measles is highly contagious, presenting with fever, cough, runny nose, and rash.
The DOH aims to vaccinate at least 90% of high-risk individuals, especially children aged 6 months to 10 years. In line with this, the health agency has established a Public Health Emergency Operations Center (PHEOC) to coordinate response efforts, supported by World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), and the United States Center for Disease Control (USCDC).
The strategy includes non-selective vaccination in specific regions and the reminder for free vaccines at local health centers. Moreover, respiratory precautions learned from the COVID-19 pandemic are emphasized. The surge in cases is attributed to disruptions in routine immunizations during the pandemic. This aligns with global trends of increased vaccine-preventable diseases, thus, highlighting the importance of vaccination efforts even after the COVID-19 pandemic.
