“Magic mushroom” for medical, research use gets green light
Thailand has authorized the medical and research use of opium and psilocybin mushrooms, commonly known as magic mushrooms. This change was formalized in a directive by Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew and became effective in April, following its publication in the Royal Gazette. Previously, the ministry had removed kratom, marijuana, and hemp from the Category 5 narcotics list. The directive now specifies that while opium and magic mushrooms remain on the Category 5 list, they can be used for medical purposes and research. This decision was made under the authority of Articles 24 and 58 of the Narcotics Code.
