New AI technology to identify children at high risk of myopia
A team of researchers has tapped the power of AI (artificial intelligence) technology to address the rising prevalence of high myopia among children as well as adults in Singapore.
A new tool has been developed by researchers at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), to identify young children who are at risk of developing high myopia, a condition that can later result in eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataract, and other vision problems. The technology enables prompt assessment and intervention using deep learning algorithms. The AI system’s developers hope to reduce Singaporeans’ risk of complications and rising incidence of severe nearsightedness through early detection and intervention.
