WHO, ECDC warm of oncoming COVID wave in Europe
The World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have announced that Europe is likely entering yet another COVID wave, noting an uptick in cases across the region. Despite the COVID pandemic falling on the global radar, a joint statement by the WHO’s Europe Director and ECDC’s Director sounds a grim alarm.
“Although we are not where we were one year ago, it is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic is still not over,” said Hans Kluge, WHO’s Europe Director.
Similarly, ECDC’s Director, Andrea Ammon, said, “We are unfortunately seeing indicators rising again in Europe, suggesting that another wave of infections has begun.”
According to WHO’s latest region-wide data, only Europe recorded a rise in COVID-19 cases in the week that ended Oct. 2, clocking an increase of 8% from the week prior.
The WHO and ECDC have advised the millions of Europeans who remain unvaccinated to get a shot immediately.
“There was no time to lose,” the WHO and ECDC said, adding that vulnerable groups, including people over 60 years old, pregnant women, and those with co-morbidities, should get vaccinated against both influenza and COVID-19, ahead of an expected surge in cases of seasonal influenza.
