Govt told to emphasise on prevention of non-communicable diseases
KUALA LUMPUR: The government is urged to give emphasis on preventive measures against non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney failure and stroke which are becoming more serious in the country.
Dr Azman Ismail (PKR-Kuala Kedah) said the World Health Organisation (WHO) had predicted that by the year 2025, the world would have 807,000 diabetic patients, but Malaysia had already recorded more than 3.6 million diabetic patients.
“If diabetic patients face problems such as kidney failure, leg amputation, stroke, heart disease, blindness and various other complications which prevent them from working, this can cause the country to lose billions of ringgit,” he said when debating the Supply Bill 2014 at the Dewan Rakyat in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Thus, he called on the Prime Minister , who is also the Finance Minister, to reconsider the allocation of RM22.1 billion for the Health Ministry which was said to only focus on operating expenditure.
