Goggles Trick you to Go on Diet
JAPAN – Another bizarre tool for losing weight has been invented by a group of researchers at the University of Tokyo. Goggles that trick the wearer into thinking the plain snakc in their hand is a chocolate cookie, or make biscuits appear larger have been unveiled, offering hope to weak-willed dieters around the globe.
The device combines computer wizardry and augmented reality to fool the senses and make users feel more satisifed with smaller or less appealing treats. The glasses were tested at Tokyo University and people wearing the enlarging glasses ate 9.3% fewer cookies than a control group. When the glasses made the cookies look smaller instead people ate 15% more cookies.
In another project, the team developed a “meta cookie” where the headgear uses scent bottles and visual trickery to fool the wearer into thinking the snack they are eating is anything but a plain biscuit.
According to the researchers, users can set the device to their favourite taste so they think they are eating a chocolate or strawberry-flavoured cookie. Experiments so far have shown that 80% of subjects are fooled.
The team has no plans yet to commercialise their invention but would like to investigate whether people wanting to lose weight can use the device.
