Drinking water before meals helps in losing weight

August 28, 2015

Studies show that drinking half a liter of water before every meal can help you lose weight.
In the study, 84 obese adults were asked to follow a 12-week program. The participants were divided into two groups. All of them were given the same instructions on diet and exercise, but the first group was asked to drink 500 ml of water 30 minutes before every meal.

The second group served as the control group and was just asked to imagine a full stomach before they eat.
After the 12–week period, the participants from the first group lost an average of 9.48 pounds in 12 weeks. They lost 2.87 pounds more than the control group.

“When combined with brief instructions on how to increase your amount of physical activity and on a healthy diet, this seems to help people to achieve some extra weight loss — at a moderate and healthy rate. It’s something that doesn’t take much work to integrate into our busy everyday lives,” says Dr Helen Parretti, the lead author of the study.

Researchers from the University of Birmingham conducted the study and will be published in the September issue of Obesity.
