Dieters, eat on large tables

January 20, 2016

To eat less food, serve food in small portions on large tables. A Cornell Food & Brand Lab fed people pizza for a science experiment. Best people ever.

Researchers cut up four large pizzas into either eight or sixteen slices. They then placed the two pies and small tables barely bigger than the pies and another two pies on larger tables. They then asked 219 university students to pick one table and go on an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet.

Students at the larger table ate less overall since they were distracted by the table’s size. The large table groups ate the same number of slices. The small table group however, had no such distraction. The small table group with the smaller pizza slices ate more slices because they know it’s a smaller portion compared to the other tables’.

The study is published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research.
