People with low self-esteem handle thoughts of death badly

August 28, 2015

Do you want to know when you’re going to die?

A more important question would be how would you handle it? The answer depends on your self-esteem.

Researchers from the University of Kent’s School of Psychology discovered that people with low self-esteem react to mortality by escapism—or shifting the focus away from themselves. Basically, people with low self confidence will not say YOLO, rather, they’d go very emo.

Their paper entitled “The great escape: The role of self-esteem and self-related cognition in terror management” is published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

People with low self-esteem tend to write less about their troubles and avoid thinking about themselves and their mortality. Methods of escape include unhealthy ways like alcohol consumption, drug use, binge eating, smoking, and other activities to reduce their self-awareness.

It is expected that these the findings will have implications for future public health policy decision-making.
