How to keep mosquitoes away

Citronella candles keep mosquitoes and other insects away. Lighting them at night can create a romantic mood.

Citronella plants are also effective.

House Fans

Using wind is an effective method against mosquitoes and other airborne pests. It prevents mosquitoes from circling and landing. When indoors, use a fan on medium or high speed.

Avoid dark colours

When dressing for outdoor activities, think white and light as mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours. Aedes mosquitoes are attracted by dark colours and some perfumes.

Wear protective clothing

Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes help cover up the body, and leave fewer exposed areas for mosquitoes to bite.

Citronella-scented anti-mosquito patches

Before sleeping, use citronella-scented anti-mosquito patches, burn mosquito coils or use anti-mosquito shower gel.

Check doors and windows

Repair screen doors and windows as necessary. Don’t let mosquitoes into the home, school or workplace.

Wire mesh and mosquito nettings

Use wire mesh screens on all windows and sleep under mosquito netting.
